The daily grind: Journey of self-discovery
Jainism, a philosophy guided by enlightened teachers called Tirthankaras, with Mahavira being the most recent in our time, teaches that the universe operates by unchanging rules. It emphasizes that every living being is inherently pure. A central idea in Jainism is Ahimsa, or non-violence. This is a deep respect for all life and a commitment to causing the least harm possible in our thoughts, words, and actions. This important ethical principle is connected to other key philosophical ideas: Satya (truthfulness), understanding the power of honest communication; Asteya (non-stealing), respecting what is freely given; Brahmacharya (celibacy or chastity), a path to self-control and saving vital energy; and Aparigraha (non-possession), a focus on letting go of material desires to find inner peace.
Inspired by this enduring and comprehensive view of the world, I am starting a practice of embracing a new personal promise daily, which I will carefully record on my blog. This series of posts will explore how these Jain principles can be practically applied in my everyday life. It will offer a look into a way of living that aims to go beyond the limits of the material world and realize the true potential of the soul. Join me in this exploration, and you might find a connection with a tradition that has, for thousands of years, guided people in their search for meaning, purpose, and ultimate freedom.
